Global multinational technology company, Microsoft partners Africa’s Number one recruitment platform, gr8jobsng.com recently organized a Recruitment Day programme to empower Nigerian youth with job opportunities in Lagos in search of new solutions to the rising social problem of unemployment in Nigeria.
The event which had the theme: “Learn and be hired!” was aimed at creating an opportunity for potential job seekers to meet with career experts and recruiters to understand the job market, be positioned and take advantage of available jobs.
The event, the organisers said, was spurred by a statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics earlier this year placed the unemployment rate of Nigeria at 10.4 per cent.
Current statistics has revealed that 50% of youths (age 18 – 35 years) are either unemployed or underemployed. Graduates at the event held at Microsoft Office in Victoria Island, Lagos had the opportunity to learn about important career related subjects like CV writing, Career Planning, Interviewing etc.
The Recruitment Day programme is unique because of the highly-practicable learning opportunities on the spot job assessment for attendees and networking opportunities for both job seekers and recruiters.
According to Olusola Amusan, philanthropies Lead of Microsoft Nigeria, “Unemployment is a global issue and its scope is growing with the youth bulge and economic downturn worldwide. Microsoft is committed to finding new solutions to address this problem,” he said. In line with this, the event brought job seekers together in one place to teach them what it takes to be hired.
Also speaking, Mrs Omomene, CEO U-Connect, Gr8jobsng and Microsoft are backing employment in Nigeria, improving employability and promoting understanding among job seekers. “We are giving them all the tips they require to understand what it is to be before an interviewer or panel, as well as develop the relevant skills that they require”. This would give them an edge in the overall job seeking process, including presentations, interviews and everything leading up to the actual hiring.
The recruitment day initiative, although starting on a small-scale, aims at achieving an immediate increase in the numbers reaching out to all job seekers across the country, providing available, accessible and affordable world-class Human Resources services.
The programme was a highly interactive session between the participants and speakers who gave relevant presentations and talks.
Speakers at the event included Mr. Olusola Amusan, Philanthropies Lead, Microsoft Nigeria and Mrs Omomene Odike, MD/ CEO U-Connect. Presentations and sessions at the event thoroughly covered navigation on the site, a CV clinic session and live interviews.
U-Connect recently launched gr8jobsng.com, an online platform which aims to bridge the gap between jobseekers and employers giving both groups the ability to achieve their full potential. The platform enables jobseekers to present themselves in an efficient and effective manner while also allowing employers successfully select suitable candidates that embody the values, competencies and or experience which they themselves seek.
Considering the level of the current unemployment, participants were taught how to rewrite their CVs, how to make a video CV as well as how to prepare for and take relevant tests on the gr8jobsng platform thereby presenting themselves as professional and competent as they are and as required by employers.
The partnership initiative involves Impacting much-needed knowledge on job seekers in Nigeria for them to understand what interview processes are all about so they can be employable to employers.
