In a message of goodwill on the occasion of Democracy Day 2020, the first to be celebrated on June 12, Globacom congratulated Nigerians for successfully maintaining the country’s tree of democracy for 21 unbroken years amid challenges. The company called for support for different levels of government in their bid to develop enduring policies aimed at giving the citizenry the democratic dividends.

Nigeria has hitherto celebrated Democracy Day on May 29, the anniversary of the democratic rule of the country since 1999. The current government, however, moved the celebration to June 12 which was the anniversary of the voided election won by late Chief MKO Abiola.

“June 12 is a watershed” according to Globacom. It stands for a sequence of events that brought us new democratic heroes in the 1990s. We have to remember that some of our fellow countrymen laid down their lives, paying the ultimate sacrifice before the country stabilized its democracy.

“In order not to be in vain for the efforts of Nigeria ‘s heroes of democracy, we must ensure that this great nation’s federating units unite and work tirelessly to preserve the stability and peaceful coexistence we have enjoyed since we returned to civil rule in 1999.”
