Qualcomm has unveiled its latest Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, a faster follow-up to the company’s flagship Snapdragon 855. The new platform aimed at giving a strong 5G, gaming, AI and XR experience sports a Kryo 485 CPU that runs at top clock speeds of up to 2.96 GHz. Qualcomm’s Adreno 640 GPU provides a performance improvement of 15 percent, the company said.
Asus announced that its ROG Phone 2 designed for gamers will be among the first to run the new processor. The phone is expected to launch later this month. Qualcomm said commercial devices based on Snapdragon 855 Plus are expected to launch in the second half of the year.
For those wishing to better experience AI, the 855 Plus offers a fourth-generation multi-core Qualcomm AI Engine, with a total capacity of over 7 trillion operations per second (7 TOPS). For immersive XR (virtual reality/augmented reality) the chipset and 5G X50 modem will provide smooth 5G experiences, the company said.
Specifically for gamers, the chipset features a Vulkan 1.1 Graphics Driver, with 20 percent more power efficiency than Open GL ES. There are also software enhancements such as Game Jank Reducer, Game Fast Loader, Game AntiCheat Extensions, and more.
