GITTA 2017: MTN Sweeps 10 Awards, Vodafone Got 4

Telecommunication Giants-MTN Ghana, on Saturday night, solidified its grasp of the industry when it swept ten of the key awards at stake at the 7th Ghana Information Technology and Telecommunication Awards (GITTA) organized by InstinctWave at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra. Vodafone Ghana took away four awards while Airtel and Tigo managed with two awards each.

MTN Ghana came topped in the categories of Customer Experience, CSR Company of the year, Mobile Money Service of the year, 4G/LTE Provider of the Year, and Cloud Service Provider of the Year as well as the Mobile Operator of the year. The company also won the IT Team of the year and Customer Service Team of the year. MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, Mr Lawal Rufai emerged CTO of the Year.

The ceremony was crowned with the covetous “CEO of The Year” Award going to the CEO of MTN Ghana, Mr Ebenzer Twum Asante.

Vodafone Ghana won in the categories of Telecom Wholesale Company of the year, Digital Transformation Award and the Telecom Brand of the Year. Vodafone Ghana’s Yolanda Cuba also emerged Industry Personality of the Year. Tigo won in the categories of Connecting the unconnected and Innovative Partnership (through its partnership with Bima). Airtel won the Telecom Business of the Year and Innovative use of Social Media category.

The Awards is aimed at recognizing customer service, innovation and excellence in the Ghana Telecommunication and Information Technology Industry. Now in its seventh year, the award has in the past also recognized the contributions of companies which have taken efforts to innovate businesses through the adoption of technology.

Awards were also given for organizational performance, product and services, innovations, executives and management teams, successful deployment of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, among others.

The Chief Executive of InstinctWave, Mr Akin Naphtal, said “GITTA has become one of the industry’s most prized honors. It is an accolade given to individuals and teams and is a vindication of the hard work, innovation and dedication of those at the forefront of this dynamic global profession,” he noted.

Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, congratulated the winners and urged them not to rest on their laurels but continue to work hard towards more innovative solutions that can benefit the industry, customers and the general public.

She said Ghanaian entrepreneurs are developing many innovative applications to satisfy the needs of the growing public and it is appropriate that such innovations are rewarded so as to motivate them to do more.

She mentioned examples to include “digital platforms for improving farmers’ productivity and access to markets, bridging educational gaps, facilitating virtual doctors’ visits and authenticating drugs to reduce the incidence of counterfeiting, transacting business on line, and paying for services from the privacy of their homes”.

“Additionally, there have been key initiatives such as the automation of Tax and Business registration systems which are already beginning to yield dividends, and upcoming digital platforms for procurement, immigration, parliamentary and judiciary services which are likely to transform the way government engages with citizens and businesses,” she stated.

While confirming her personal commitment to continue to support the IT and Telecommunication sector in Ghana to grow, the Minister also promised to collaborate with the private sector to make mobile broadband services accessible and affordable to every Ghanaian.
